phillip “PHEEL” Smith

Phillip Smith arrived early on the scene in Detroit. His premature birth yielded a developmental delay.
When he started pre-school it was discovered that he was
asthmatic. He was tested by many psychologists and was labeled as having A.D.D. (Attention Deficit Disorder).
One psychologist even informed his mother that
Phillip would not be able to function on his own and would always need supervision. This was not accepted.
Another doctor labeled him “High functioning Autistic”.
Labels are limiting and Phillip did not accept this limitation. He knew he was destined to do more.
Although some of his classes were difficult, Phillip continued to
work hard. He is currently taking classes at Wayne County Community College District/ Downtown Campus.
Phillip also drives and has his own car, something
doctors said was impossible. Doctors can look on the outside and make predictions but they have no idea what
takes place on the inside. Phillip was determined
to be a professional recording artist and with that determination he prayed.
The doors of opportunity opened for him in fantastic ways.

With his love for acting and singing, his mother took him to see many Operas.
One day at the Opera, a lady heard Phillip singing and asked him if he would like to
sing in an Opera. From that day Phillip sang in the Children's Chorus for three Operas.
La Boheme, Tosca and Carmen, Phillip brought the house down.
He also participated in learning at the Opera program. Throughout his schooling,
he sang in school choirs and had many solos. From the operas he met David
and Lisa, who began 'The Youth Under Construction' talent group. Phillip became a part of that group.
They performed in various programs throughout the city.

The doors are continuously opening for him because his daily affirmation is a prayer of gratitude
which ends with the following words, 'Lord, let me use my talents
so that I can make the world a better place.
Phillip's love of acting, singing and drama became a reality when he took acting classes at the

Detroit Repertory Theater. Soon thereafter, Phillip was introduced to Ms. Cynthia Girty,
a songwriter, singer, producer and vocal coach.
Cynthia began working, developing and vocal coaching Phillip in the recording studio.
His stage name 'PHEE'L is significant because he does feel for children
who are labeled Autistic or as having A.D.D. He has also had the opportunity,
through his extensive travels to Africa, London, and Mexico, to feel and
see some of the problems that affect kids in other states and countries.
As doors open, Phillip continues to walk through them with faith and determination.
